Life and Style – In Faith Section The Telegraph – Macon, GA. Saturday, October 11, 2003 HEADLINE: SINGLES TO MINGLE Once a month, this interdenominational ministry offers a place outside the bar scene Quotes from the article: Randy Parker remembers his first trip to Singles After Hours. “The first night I came, I was so scared that I stood there behind that table and probably ate 200 chicken nuggets and didn’t talk to anyone. It took two or three times to feel comfortable and work up the nerve to ask someone to dance. But since then, I’ve felt right at home. This is a wonderful program. I love it.” Randy went on to say” “It is a great way to meet people and not have to put up with the bar scene. I have made a lot of new friends here.” Lee Schurter, director says: “Singles After Hours is not a churchy event. We have it here at The Cupola, a neutral location, instead of a church. We just wanted a safe, low-key way for singles to meet others. A goal of the ministry is for unchurched people to find a church through people they meet here. However, we do not make church announcements or do anything else to beat them over the head with this being a ministry”. Laura Lynn Hodges remembers: “After you’re divorced, you’re looking for acceptance and love. This is a safe, loving place to find that. Our whole society is based on families, so when you are divorced or widowed, that can be cut off. Being here you can get a sense of being included and accepted while you begin to meet new people. You don’t feel so alone.” Schurter stated that Singles After Hours is not all there is to In STEP With Singles. The ministry also offers monthly bible studies along with seminars and conferences each year on topics of interest to singles.
